I've been watching a lot of reviews and comparisons between the Nissan cube/Scion xB/Kia Soul etc etc and one thing that I've noticed is that a lot of reviewers don't seem to fully understand how a CVT works. That made me realize, I'm not really even sure how it works. From what I've gathered/assumed was that a CVT had one gear that was like a rubber band. The more you pressed the gas pedal, the more the "rubberband" would stretch and if you kept it at a certain speed, the band would ease itself and the engine would return to a lower RPM range even at highway speeds.
Some reviews say it shifts or feels like it shifts though. I can't say I've ever experienced that in my cube but I once had a Lancer GTS with a CVT and that had paddle shifters. I never used them, assuming they were pointless and maybe hooked up to something in the gauge cluster that would change a number on the display to make you think you were shifting?
Found a HowStuffWorks video that might help explain it:

i don't think its like a rubber band. More like a belt that is on a cone shaped, rotor? And it travels along the varying width of the rotor effectively changing rpm? I think that's right

There's a poor, poor gnome that does all the work.

It is definitely witch craft, and I love it. Honda has done a real good job getting rid of the rubber band feeling in the accord.

The CVT is easily understandable. Two pulleys that can vary their geometry, mated by a belt or chain. Small input pulley - big output pulley, low speed. As you accelerate, the input pulley becomes larger while the output pulley becomes smaller, thus decreasing the ratio.
Regular automatics, now that is witchcraft.
